Your Guide Colin

Glasgow born and Edinburgh based, as a teenager I explored the remoter parts of Scotland astride a trusty 5-speed, pannier laden ‘racer.’ For the past 30 odd years, it has been by mountain bike, discovering fun places to ride.

Over the years and before setting up Discovery Biking Scotland, I led family and friends on many wee adventures by bike. Our off-road fun adventures have included coast2coast across Scotland, through the Cairngorms, routes in the Central Highlands and on the Isle of Arran. I’ve also completed many solo rides exploring way off the beaten track and occasionally for charity. For example, riding a 250 mile route from the summit of Scotland’s most northerly Munro (Ben Hope) to the most southerly Munro (Ben Lomond). In 2024, I rode with my 13 year-old son on his 25.5 hour non-stop ride of the 96-mile West Highland Way in aid of the global charity, Mary's Meals.

A post-graduate in Sport & Exercise Science (MSc), I’m a British Cycling Mountain Bike Leader, qualified British Cycling Coach and volunteer leader with Peebles Cycling Club (PCC). I’m also a member of Cycling UK.

My passion for mountain biking and the fun and adventure that cycling offers people of all ages and abilities inspired me to set up Discovery Biking Scotland. As an aside, these travels have also proven useful when researching and writing about Scotland for several notable travel guidebook publishers including Rough Guide and Footprint.

But let’s focus on Edinburgh and the Pentland Hills. I’d love to help you enjoy your cycling in the Pentlands on the doorstep of my family home in Edinburgh. As we pedal along, you can feast your eyes on fantastic views of Scotland's capital city and beyond. And you can enjoy some tasty coffee and cake!
